Tourist Board Big Break For NI Musicians

The search is on to find a new soundtrack for Northern Ireland

Updated: 16/02/2011

The Northern Ireland Tourist Board is on the hunt for a new soundtrack from a Northern Irish band or artist to feature in a major marketing campaign.

Recent NITB campaigns have helped boost the profile of Belfast act Master and Dog (formerly known as John, Shelly and The Creatures), whose song ‘Long May You Reign’ single featured heavily on television, radio and in cinema adverts across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. For the next campaign, NITB will be assisted in soundtrack selection by a judging panel that includes Pearse Moore from the Nerve Centre in Derry, Stuart Baillie from Belfast's Oh Yeah Centre, and Ross Graham of FFWD NI.

The theme of the campaign is ‘Explore More’ and music submitted should be able to complement images of beautiful landscapes or people enjoying activities such as mountain climbing, surfing, a relaxing spa or a music festival.

Helen Carey, NITB Product Marketing Officer said: 'We’re on the hunt for an original song or instrumental that will capture Northern Ireland’s true character and encourage people to tour, journey and stopover in our little part of the world.

'Previous campaigns have featured music from Belfast band John, Shelly and the Creatures who have since gone on to receive rave reviews across Ireland and further afield. Now, hopefully, we can provide a platform for another local act to go on to bigger things.'

As well as offering artists from Northern Ireland a golden opportunity to increase their profile and have the potential of being heard by millions of people throughout Ireland, the winner will also be able to pick up some new equipment with a voucher to the value of £1,000.

'For such a small country, Northern Ireland has always punched above its weight when it comes to musical talent,' said Carey. 'From legends like Van Morrison, Phil Coulter and James Galway to the rockier sounds of The Undertones and current superstars Snow Patrol, our music has received global recognition.

The NITB competition is free to enter and musicians can submit their tracks by post, email or online before the closing date of February 28, 2011. All entries must be completely original compositions and only one song per artist can be submitted.

Full details on how to enter along with terms and conditions for entry, which must be read and agreed, can be found at www.discovernorthernireland.com/musiccomp.
