Hot on the heels on Land of Giants – the largest outdoor art performance ever seen in Northern Ireland, and featuring the talents of the Belfast Community Circus – performers Nicole & Martin will be setting up their trademark white tent in the Holywood Rudolf Steiner School in County Down, to maintain the magic.
As part of their European-wide tour, the highly-acclaimed circus duo will be bringing to life fairytale classics such as 'The Fisherman and His Wife' and the 'Girl Without Hands'. From 26 – 27 July, the grounds of the North’s only Waldorf-Steiner school will be transformed into a circus, with a huge white marquee and all the trimmings that go with a perfect summer’s evening out.
'Nicole & Martin have played across Europe several times,' said Judith Matthews, a teacher at the school. 'Their fairytales will be highly appealing to children and in this day and age, the wonder which they evoke using traditional circus skills will doubtless make this an evening that will be remembered for a long time to come.'
This Swiss-based outfit has been entertaining audiences since 1999. Nicole & Martin is a professional, independent theatre group with its own wooden-framed big top, wooden caravans and towing vehicles, which have progressed from tractors upwards.
The format is simple. Often sparse props allows people to use their own imagination to fill in the spaces, and tightwire walking, formidable acrobatics and exquisite live music make their production truly original.
In the 13 years from 1999 to 2012, Nicole & Martin performed 1767 times in 336 venues and in eight different countries. The shows are translated and performed in seven different languages.
In 2002, Nicole & Martin were awarded a prize for the promotion of culture by the canton of Basel in Switzerland, and received both the prestigious Tapwater Award and the sought-after Sold-Out Award from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2006 (Scotland).
'Fairytales are a critical part of the school’s curriculum,' added Matthews. 'They teach qualities such as compassion, courage, honesty and tenacity, in addition to literacy and numeracy, of course. Best of all children love them.'
Tickets for Nicole & Martin are available from the Belfast Welcome Centre or from the Steiner School website.
