Renowned Vocalist Set for Walled City Music Festival

Canadian opera singer Measha Brueggergosman will close the Derry concert series this year backed by the Ulster Orchestra

The closing gala concert line-up has been announced for this year's Walled City Music Festival, which returns to Derry~Londonderry from May 31 - June 4.

Leading Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosman will bring the curtain down on the chamber music festival's nineth edition, alongside Co-Artistic Director and pianist Cathal Breslin and the Ulster Orchestra, with an exciting programme featuring the different musical styles of Verdi, Mahler, Berlioz, Borodin and Rachmaninov.

Brueggergosman has emerged as one of the most magnificent performers and vibrant personalities of our time, performing in the world’s greatest halls as both an opera singer and a concert artist, and singing to 3.2 billion viewers worldwide at the opening of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Canada.

Fellow performer Cathal Breslin, born in Derry, has been praised worldwide as one of the most exciting pianists of his generation with critical acclaim such as 'superb intensity and passion' (Cleveland Plain Dealer), and 'a deep connection to the music' (Tampa Oracle).

In a past review, Culture NI said: 'The strength of Breslin’s playing is so that he’s acutely conscious of when he needs to take the lead melodically, and when that responsibility passes to the other instruments. In and out he weaves with deftness and sensitivity, making the moments when he really does grasp hold of the music’s throttle all the more arresting.'

Both artists will perform alongside the region’s premier symphony orchestra in a rousing closing gala concert at the Millenium Forum on Sunday, June 4.

Matthew Greenall, Executive Director of Walled City Music said: 'We're very happy to be promoting the festival's very first orchestral concert, in company with the Ulster Orchestra, and also to present one of the world's outstanding voices in Measha Brueggergosman, a truly superb talent. Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto is one of the great romantic works, and we are greatly looking forward to the performance by our Artistic Director, Cathal Breslin. This concert is certain to be one of the musical highlights of the year in Derry.'

The Walled City Music Festival takes place in venues including The Glassworks, Cultúrlann, Millennium Forum and Ulster University Magee. Tickets are now available via the Millennium Forum Box Office or online at www.millenniumforum.co.uk. View the full programme at www.walledcitymusic.com.
