Get to Grips with Graffiti
The Playhouse hosts a weekend of urban art workshops and demonstrations to mark the launch of the second Release the Pressure festival
For any young artists who may fancy themselves as the next 'Banksy of the Foyle', a free weekend of graffiti art, design, murals and workshops is set to take place at the Playhouse in Derry this Friday and Saturday (February 5 and 6).
Resident graffiti arts company and hosts UV-Arts will also use the event as the launchpad for Release the Pressure, the International Graffiti and Mural Arts Festival set to return for its second annual outing later this year.
Taster workshops, sketching sessions and spray painting tutorials will be held from 11am to 5pm on Saturday, February 6. A live collaborative drawing event in the Playhouse Plaza will follow from 8pm with quality backing music and drinks provided.
A special lunchtime event between 12.30pm and 1.30pm on Friday, February 5 will also see a showcase of graffiti and street-based works created by young people involved in UV-Arts' Urban Intervention programme. Complimentary catering and craft beers come courtesy of Pyke 'N' Pommes and the Walled City Brewery.
The new urban arts company, specialising in community mural arts, commercial and private walls, interior design and guerrilla advertising campaigns, took up residency in the Playhouse in September 2015.
For this special launch event they will feature work from their annual graffiti and mural arts festival Release the Pressure - a city-wide celebration of street art, graffiti and contemporary mural arts.
Karl Porter of UV-Arts said: 'We’re so excited to treat everyone to an array of vibrant urban art produced by local and international artists on our special lunchtime event Friday.
'This programme, funded by the Housing Executive NI, aims to educate, promote and challenge our perceptions of public space through exciting and visually engaging street art-inspired community murals.
He added: 'On Saturday join us for an exciting, action-packed weekend of graffiti goodness with free taster sessions, sketching battles and a unique live collaborative drawing experience!
'This day of creativity will also feature a graffiti jam with artists from across Ireland including DanLeo, Vanessa Power, Vents and Friz, as well as local graffiti and street artists Yin, Easi, Joke, Noys and Snak.'
