Jenny Bristow's Great Sunday Lunch

Download two free recipes as the celebrity chef opens a new campaign and competition with Age Concern

Jenny Bristow has teamed up with Age Concern Northern Ireland to launch The Great Sunday Lunch, taking place on Sunday October 19.

Bristow has contributed two free recipes to the campaign, which is designed to celebrate Sunday Lunches while raising funds for older people.

Sunday lunch is often the most socially significant event of the week, when people gather with friends and family to catch up over a meal, relax, have fun, and make plans. It's all about communication and spending time together.

Yet older people are particularly likely to be isolated. 1 in 10 over-65s live with constant or near loneliness.

53% of older people in Northern Ireland say that television is their main source of company and 1 in 4 people aged 65 and over spend more than 15 hours alone each day.

'Sunday Lunch is a time for everyone around the table to share a fantastic meal and enjoy each other’s company,' says Bristow.

'It is one of life’s great pleasures whatever the menu. Age Concern’s Great Sunday Lunch is a unique opportunity to get together for great food and conversation at home, at work, in restaurants and hotels.'

'The Great Sunday Lunch is a fun event that will raise vital funds for our work with older people,' says ACNI cheif executive Anne O’Reilly.

'This is a wonderful opportunity for people to get together with older relatives and friends who usually eat Sunday Lunch alone. The sense of isolation experienced by older people can be particularly acute at a time when family members traditionally spend time with each other.'

People can get involved by inviting friends and family for dinner and donating to Age Concern NI, getting together in local church or community groups, or attending one of Age Concern NI's participating venues.

Bristow is also judging the best Sunday Lunch on the menu throughout Northern Ireland. She will be looking out for creativity, interesting recipes and the best use of local produce.

Entries must be submitted by October 3 by emailing greatsundaylunch@ageconcernni.org. All entries must be accompanied by the answer to the following question:

Who would you invite from the past or present to your Great Sunday Lunch and why?
