Libraries NI Festival of Words
19 libraries across Northern Ireland hold a wide variety of free events aimed at increasing library memberships
Libraries NI has launched its first Festival of Words, a programme of free events taking place across Northern Ireland throughout the month of October 2013.
This festival is a celebration of words through literature, poetry and storytelling, creative writing seminars, workshops, author readings and drama performances, and a full and varied programme of events is taking place in 19 libraries across the country. Jane Moore, cultural services manager at Libraries NI said: 'Libraries NI is delighted to introduce its first Festival of Words, giving people the opportunity to sample poetry, writing, literature events and workshops for free. We look forward to welcoming library customers and those new to libraries to celebrate this festival with us.'
Libraries participating in the festival are Ballymena Central, Banbridge, Bangor Carnegie, Belfast Central, Coalisland, Derry Central, Enniskillen, Falls Road (Belfast), Lisburn City, Magherafelt, Newry City, Portadown, Rathcoole, Shankill Road (Belfast), Shantallow (Derry~Londonderry), Strabane, Strathfoyle (Derry~Londonderry), Tullycarnet (Belfast) and Waterside (Derry~Londonderry).
Events include crime author Brian McGilloway reading Strabane Library, poetry workshops with Moyra Donaldson and Denise Blake, Loud and Live in the Library! with songwriter Paul Casey, a panel discussion on the 2013 Man Booker Prize shortlist, and a talk on Victorian ghost stories on Halloween night.
Libraries NI is the public library service for Northern Ireland. It came into being on April 1, 2009 as part of the Review of Public Administration. Its services are regionally planned and locally delivered and focus on support for learning and learners, access to information, cultural and creative development, heritage and digitisation, and reading.
Admission to all Festival of Words events is free. Library membership is not essential to attend events – though people are encouraged to sign up for free library membership during the festival to avail of a wide range of free services for people of all ages.
Festival of Words runs in libraries across Northern Ireland until October 31.
