Glen Wallace to Teach The Secret of Screen Acting

ITV drama star lined up to lead the next in Theatre Masterclass NI's programme of performance workshops, at the Grand Opera House

Budding actors have the chance to learn from TV star Glen Wallace at Belfast's Grand Opera House this Sunday, May 22, as part of a programme of performance workshops from Theatre Masterclass NI, a new initiative offering expertise to those looking to break into the world of drama.

Wallace is a Northern Irish actor, born in Ballymena, Co Antrim, and currently features alongside James Nesbitt on the cast of ITV series The Secret. He has also had roles in Wire in the Blood, Casualty and Holy Cross for BBC Films, and has been nominated for Best Dramatic Performance at the British Soap Awards.

The workshops take place each month, with each class structured to offer specifically tailored training and involving an element of three main disciplines of acting, singing and movement. Glen’s class will take the students through an Introduction to Screen Acting, offering some techniques and tips about how to best prepare and act for TV and film roles.

Theatre Masterclass Northern Ireland is run by Killyman actor Fra Fee, best known for his role as Courfeyrac in Hollywood blockbuster Les Misérables, starring alongside Anne Hathaway and Russell Crowe. Speaking to Culture NI earlier this year, Fee felt that there had been a palpable need for it at home.

'What I’ve discovered in London is that young performers there are given such amazing opportunities, and are really exposed to the industry quite early', he said. 'So the talent is utterly phenomenal, even before one gets to drama school.'

'I just think it’s a bit unfair for young performers here not to be given a bit of a slice of that before auditioning for drama school. I plan to be at as many of the workshops as possible, and I’m also inviting my friends who are actively working in the industry over to teach.'

The 28-year old is full of praise for the performers emerging on our doorstep: 'I have taught workshops for young actors in Northern Ireland for several years and have always been astounded at the wealth of raw talent around.

'Young performers deserve an opportunity to develop and hone their skills in preparation for drama school auditions and life in the industry, and established performers should have the option to continue their development and exercise their skills in a creative environment alongside their professional work'.

Other guest tutors lined up to teach at TMNI include Emmy Award-winning film and TV casting director Carla Strong (Game of Thrones) who leads a masterclass on June 24. Acclaimed actor and director Dan Gordon, musical theatre star Killian Donnelly and Abbey Theatre actress Ruth McGill have all lent their support to lead workshops for participating students since the start of the year.

Theatre Masterclass NI is open to all actors from 14 years old, with individual workshops priced at £35 or a full term for £75.
