Context Gallery

Derry’s Context Gallery was established in 1993

Context Gallery, situated within The Playhouse, Derry was established in 1993 specifically to support and encourage young and emerging artists living and working in Ireland.

Context Gallery recognised the lack of any practical support from the established gallery system for younger artists and set about providing a platform for their work. At the same time the gallery has maintained a positive relationship with the local artistic community.

In a bid to bring the arts to as wide an audience as possible the gallery produces In Context, a free and accessible tabloid format periodical which is distributed to galleries, schools, libraries and various public places. In Context details contemporary visual art in a non-threatening and accessible way.

Similarly, the gallery’s education programme is designed to open the arts to all with children’s workshops and gallery talks chipping away at ‘the arts’ as an elitist and exclusive domain.
