Culture NI Successful at Tourism Awards

Nerve Centre project wins best use of digital/social media for City of Culture campaign

The Nerve Centre’s Culture NI digital team has picked up its second industry award for its work on the UK City of Culture 2013 digital platforms and social media.

The team scooped the ‘Best Use of Digital/Social Media’ prize at the Northern Ireland Tourism Awards at a glitzy reception in the Ulster Hall.

Culture Company and Culture NI, which is core funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, won a similar accolade at the prestigious Belfast Telegraph Business Awards in March this year.

Digital platforms played a major role in building engagement with Derry~Londonderry’s year as the first UK City of Culture. With a weekly reach of up to 500,000 people through social media, a weekly e-newsletter, the City of Culture website and YouTube channel, the digital campaign achieved outstanding levels of interaction and engagement.

In addition, iPhone, Android and mobile apps were developed providing information on tourist attractions and venues for visitors exploring the city.

The judges praised the Nerve Centre’s breadth of activity, the number of channels used to drive such a large programme of events and the impressive results achieved given the challenges of marketing the UK City of Culture worldwide.

David Lewis, the Nerve Centre’s Director of Communications and Digital Content, said: ‘To be recognised by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board in this way is another fantastic achievement for the Culture NI team, Culture Company and the many other partners who were part of the City of Culture digital effort.

‘The overall digital experience and ‘buzz’ have been vital in telling Derry~Londonderry’s new story to the world and changing negative perceptions of the city, both internally and externally, to positive ones. The digital content that was created throughout the year will leave an indelible digital footprint and a colourful record of the many achievements in 2013.’

Sonya Whitefield, Arts Development Officer, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, added: ‘Congratulations to Culture Northern Ireland on a fantastic online campaign. Thanks to their efforts Northern Ireland was able to share with the world news of all the wonderful events and activities which made 2013 City of Culture the remarkable year that it was. Well done to all involved on this well-deserved award.’

The City of Culture also took home the award for Best Event/Festival (2013 Fleadh Cheoil) and the Outstanding Contribution to Tourism.
