SOMA Festival 2018
Running from July 18-22 across Castlewellan, the SOMA Festival is an annual festival full of concerts, workshops, art exhibitions, storytelling, poetry, health & wellbeing fair and various family events across the week
DatesWednesday, 18 July 2018 to Sunday, 22 July 2018
Singer-songwriter Damien Dempsey is the latest act to be added to the SOMA Festival bill alongside Sharon Shannon and Paul Brady.
The gritty Irish star, famed for mixing traditional Irish folk with contemporary lyrics to deliver hard hitting social commentary, will be joined by the SOMA Festival house band.
Although Dempsey released his debut single Dublin Town in 1997 it wasn’t until he re-recorded on his They Don't Teach This Shit in School album in 2000 that he began to be noticed by the industry.
Outspoken singer Sinead O’Connor spotted his talent and immediately invited him on tour with him championing Dempsey as 'one to watch'. At the time she said: 'I don't think there's ever been anyone like him. I think he represents the sort of voice in Ireland that is not allowed to be heard.'
Dempsey will take to the stage at St. Malachy's GAC, 30 Circular Road, Castlewellan on Thursday July 19.
He will be joined on stage by the SOMA Festival house band consisting of leading uilleann piper Jarlath Henderson, master percussionist Liam Bradley, talented keyboard player Graham Henderson and top cellist Kate Ellis.
