Notable Carrickfergus historian
Samuel McSkimin, historian of Carrickfergus, was born in Ballyclare, Co Antrim, in 1775.
Settling in Carrickfergus, he ran a grocery business and became an authority on the town’s past, turbulent history and famous inhabitants largely through the memories of his customers.
Over the years he recorded these details in an oral history of the town, before compiling the complete chronicle, The History of Carrickfergus.
McSkimin published another similarly authoritative work, The Annals of Ulster, on the 1798 Rebellion. In 1909 his granddaughter, Elizabeth McCrum, printed a revised and updated edition of the history.
McSkimin was buried in the churchyard of St Nicholas’s Church, Carrickfergus, in 1843.
