Walled City Music Festival Announcements

American pianist Jeremy Denk joins fellow countrymen Andy Akiho and Ian David Rosenbaum as Derry's classical concert series takes shape for an eighth year

Celebrated American pianist Jeremy Denk has been announced as the second guest artist from the world of classical music lined up to perform as part of the eighth Walled City Music Festival, taking place at The Glassworks in Derry~Londonderry from June 2 - 5.

Hailed by the New York Times as an artist 'you want to hear no matter what he performs', Denk's 'extraordinarily powerful' performances span the works of Byrd, Bach and Schubert as well as a series of ragtime music by composers such as Stravinsky, Hindemith and Ives.

The pianist joins world-class percussionists Andy Akiho and Ian David Rosenbaum, recently announced to be opening this year's festival with a ground-breaking exploration of steel pan drum, percussion, piano and flute ensembles in a wide-ranging programme of repertoire spanning baroque to contemporary styles.

Akiho's music has been described as a blend of Middle Eastern, reggae, noir jazz, Japanese folk, brooding 80s pop, and bright ringing soca tonalities. He is a winner of the prestigious Rome Prize, has been a driving force behind 21st century music and brings the song-like quality of steel pans to his performances.

Together with Ian David Rosenbaum, one of the few percussionists ever to be a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Centre, the two are expected to give a brilliantly collaborative opening night performance featuring co-Artistic Directors Cathal Breslin (piano) and Sabrina Hu (flute).

On the programme's latest addition, Walled City Executive Director, Matthew Greenall, said: 'We are delighted that Jeremy Denk has agreed to perform at this year's Walled City Music Festival. Jeremy is one of the world's most innovative programmers and is a natural communicator as well as a consummate musician. His recital at the 2015 BBC Proms in London was a highlight of their chamber season, and we look forward to welcoming him to Derry for what will be a very special concert.'

The Walled City Music Festival takes place from June 2 - 5 in The Glassworks venue and tickets, priced £10/£5, are now available via the Cultúrlann box office or online at www.culturlann-doire.ie. For more information visit www.walledcitymusic.com.
