Things to Do at Culture Night Derry/Strabane

Handpicked highlights from the North West district's joint programme of free cultural escapades

The continental juggernaut that is Culture Night takes over both Derry~Londonderry and Strabane this Friday, September 18, with the district's new joint council offering a vibrant programme of free events exploring dance, music and film as well as traditional art, digital media and the area's rich cultural heritage.

Below is a selection of our highlights to help guide you through the evening's maze of colourful activity.

Bugs - 10am - 11pm

Artist Katie Blue returns to Derry to showcase her latest junk sculptures, an assortment of creepy crawlies made from recycled toys and household objects, at Little Blue World in the Yellow Yard.

Connoisseurs of the Dreadful - 10am - 11pm (Presentation from 10pm - 10.30pm)

Artist and record proprietor Ben Allen along with debonair man about town Ronnie Cathcart exhibit dreadful LP covers from their personal archives at the Abbazappa Record Shop in the Yellow Yard.

Creative Typewriting Challenge - 10am - 11pm

Let your fingers dance and take part in a quirky and 'qwerty' creative writing exercise, back by popular demand at Little Acorns Bookstore.


Artisan Fair - 4pm - 10pm

Meet the best local makers, crafters and food producers at this special CultureTECH and Culture Night edition of the weekly Craft Village event.

Creative Derry - 5pm - 8.30pm

An original and fascinating exhibition celebrating the artistic and cultural creativity of the city's artists, workers and social entrepreneurs at the Rath Mor Centre. The colourful displays will highlight the work of Guildhall Press and other writers, poets, visual artists, photographers and also feature screenings of breathtaking Hive Studio drone footage of the city.

Culture Night Wall Art - 5pm - 11pm

Be part of an exciting new wall art project: Diverse City (Wall Art). To mark Culture Night 'SmartSwag' artists Domnall Starkie and Pauric Lawne will hold a workshop with members of the public in the Craft Village to create artwork for a new piece of public wall art celebrating diversity in the city. Echo Echo - Open Dance Studio - 6pm

The Derry-based dance theatre company's studio opens to the public for a variety of performances suitable for all ages.

Out There, Thataway - Exhibition - 6pm - 7.30pm

Kick off your Culture Night with refreshments and a late-night opening of the Centre for Contemporary Arts' current exhibition.

CultureTECH City Arcade - 6pm - 10pm

Three days of video games, Minecraft tournaments, educational gaming and special guests kicks off on Friday evening at the Millennium Forum. Book your tickets.

SYNC Records Launch - 6pm - 8pm

Nerve Centre's new youth-run record label launches with performances by Rebecca Mulhern, Susie Blue and Christopher Brothers at St. Augustine's Church. Meanwhile other artists to have developed through the SYNC programme perform at Café Nervosa.

BBC 'Make It Digital' - 6pm - 10pm

BBC Northern Ireland is bringing robots, virtual reality, gaming and broadcast technology to the Guildhall Square for a host of fun and digital activities. Find out more.

CultureTECH Street Party - 6.30pm - 10.30pm

A free, family-friendly street party featuring performances from Booka Brass Band, Loris, Jessica Doherty and The Queen & Disco in the Guildhall Square. Book your ticket here.

Cóisir An Tí - 7pm - 9pm

Cultúlann Uí Chanáin, the home of Irish culture, present their 'Irish House Party', where visitors can experience the best in traditional Irish music and sample homegrown produce.

The 39 Steps Gallery Launch - 7pm - 10pm

The 39 Steps Gallery invite you to join in a celebration of colour and texture at the spacious light-filled gallery's launch night, above Beyond Redemption Vintage Store.

Launch of The Social - 7pm

The Social Studios and Gallery launch its new website with a plethera of arts activities at its Shipquay Street exhibition space.

Open Mic Night at the Alley Theatre - 8pm

Dreams of Freedom - Exhibition - 8pm

On loan from Amnesty International, Eden Place Arts Centre launch the exhibition combining powerful quotes by human rights champions with pictures by illustrators such as Barroux, Ros Asquith and Chris Riddell.
