Derry~Londonderry Gears up for Cinema City
Derry~Londonderry celebrates the medium of film throughout November with directors Danny Boyle, Paul Greengrass and more
Some of the biggest figures in international cinema, including Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle, BAFTA winner Paul Greengrass and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and actor Sam Shepard, will be arriving in Derry~Londonderry in November for a month-long programme of film screenings and special events, entitled Cinema City.
Cinema City is presented by Culture Company and the Nerve Centre, in association with the University of Ulster, BFI, BAFTA, Film Hub NI, NWRC and the Foyle Film Festival. With venues including Brunswick Moviebowl, the Nerve Centre and Ebrington Square, Cinema City is sure to be one of the highlights of the UK City of Culture year.
Four key themes will be woven through the programme for Cinema City: Gothic, Portrait of a City, Legacies of Conflict, and Art in Cinema. The eclectic month-long programme, which also takes in the 26th Foyle Film Festival from November 20 – 24, will include special seasons on the films of Danny Boyle, Sam Shepard and Stephen Rea.
Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle and BAFTA-nominated screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce will be In Conversation at St Columb’s Hall during the Foyle Film Festival on Saturday, November 23, to discuss their work on the London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony and The Return of Colmcille, the flagship City of Culture event which took place during the summer.
BAFTA-winning director Paul Greengrass will attend a special screening in Brunswick Moviebowl of his new film, Captain Philips, on Thursday, November 14. Later that evening he will be In Conversation with Professor Martin McLoone of the University of Ulster.
Oscar-winning actor and screenwriter Sam Shepard and acclaimed German director Wim Wenders will attend a screening of their classic movie, Paris, Texas in Brunswick Moviebowl on Friday, November 22, as part of the Foyle Film Festival.
And following a screening of his debut feature film, Angel, in the Nerve Centre on November 19, Oscar-nominated actor Stephen Rea will discuss his long-standing collaboration with Irish director Neil Jordan.
