QFT Oscar Winners

With the 2013 Academy Award nominations hot off the press, Queen's Film Theatre manager Susan Picken chooses her most deserving films of the past year

With the nominations for the 85th Academy Awards hot off the press, the folks at Northern Ireland’s leading independent cinema, Queen's Film Theatre, have revealed who they think should be the worthy winners in 2013.

Ahead of the Oscar ceremony in LA on Sunday, February 24 – when Steven Spielberg's epic Lincoln will lead the way with 12 nominations – QFT will be screening its own selection of films as part of a dedicated Oscars Week from February 15-22.

Commenting on the Oscars short list, QFT manager, Susan Picken, said it was an 'exciting year' for international cinema. 'The Oscars always generate great debate as to who should and who shouldn’t win. It is also a great recognition of new talent, with names such as Michael Haneke and Behn Zeitlen being nominated side by side for Best Director.

'The Academy Award shortlist is reassuring from a QFT perspective, as QFT was either the first or the only place to screen many of the films nominated in the whole of Northern Ireland. We would usually screen the winning films again once they have been announced. This year, however, we have decided to take the leap and present our choice before the winners have even been announced.'

And the winners according to the QFT should be…

Best Film: Argo
Best Actress: Quvenzhane Wallis in Beasts of the Southern Wild
Best Actor: Joaquin Phoenix in The Master
Best Adapted Screenplay: Silver Linings Playbook
Best Original Screenplay: Moonrise Kingdom
Best Director: Michael Haneke for Amour
Best Foreign Film: A Royal Affair
Best Documentary:
Searching for Sugar Man

QFT Oscars Week will feature all these titles, allowing audiences in Northern Ireland to experience a cross section of the nominations before the official Oscar winners are announced.

'These are the films we would choose,' added Picken. 'However usually one film dominates across a number of categories, leaving some fantastic and deserving films in the shadows. It will be interesting to see how realistic our choices are.'
