The Linen Hall Library

Learn more about one of Ireland's oldest libraries and the benefits of becoming a member

The Linen Hall Library first opened its doors in 1788. Now, over two hundred years later it still stands as one of Ireland’s oldest and most unique repositories of new and old books, internationally renowned collections and more.

Located in the very heart of Belfast in Donegall Square North, the Library also boasts an impressive events schedule with exhibitions in the spacious Vertical Gallery, author readings, language classes, exhibitions and theatrical performances.

Adding to the leisurely feel of the library is a café with sweeping views over the square and a gift shop with a superb selection of items including hand-crafted jewellery, exclusive prints, books, cards and stationery.

The library’s general collection houses every category of book one would find in any library including the popular Richard and Judy Book Club titles and a children’s section.

What makes the library unique is its internationally renowned collections, including the definitive archive of the recent ‘Troubles’, the Northern Ireland Political Collection, the unparalleled Irish and Local Studies Collection, the Theatre and Performing Arts Archive and the incomparable Genealogy and Heraldry Collection which is visited by people from all parts of the globe who wish to trace their Irish roots.
