The Playhouse Reaches Lotto Awards Final

Derry venue appeals for public votes having been named amongst UK's Best Heritage Project nominees

The Playhouse Theatre is appealing for the public to cast their votes and help it go all the way in this year's National Lottery Awards, having recently reached the final stage of its nominated category.

The annual search recognises and celebrates the difference that Lottery-funded projects make to communities across the UK. Situated along the historic walls of Derry~Londonderry, the arts centre is one of only seven finalists shortlisted for the title of Best Heritage Project - and the only from Northern Ireland.

The theatre's distinctive red doors first opened in 1992 after director Pauline Ross rescued two Grade II-listed former school blocks which had narrowly escaped demolition only a few years prior.

A £4.6m revamp through the Heritage Lottery Fund and other sources helped restore the listed buildings and the award-winning Playhouse relaunched in November 2009.

The buildings are considered one of the best examples in Northern Ireland of how listed properties can be sympathetically restored and fused with modern design and have won numerous awards, including a British Urban Regeneration Award.

The Playhouses also runs a large selection of socially engaged arts programmes, providing opportunities, training, guidance and experience for all types of artistic individuals and creative communities.

It works in some of the most divided and deprived neighbourhoods in Northern Ireland, and has a 24 year track record of using arts activity to promote healing, understanding, reconciliation and transformation between our communities.

The revival has led to the restoration of other large buildings in the neighbourhood and has helped drive Derry’s creative economy. In many ways it has not only led to the restoration of buildings and the wider area, but to the restoration of people themselves, empowering them and giving themselves a renewed confidence.
