Local festival founded in 1969
The Portaferry Gala in Co Down has been running for the past 30 years. The majority of events at the gala are free to the public, and thousands of visitors flock to Portaferry each year. Popular annual events include teen and pub idol competitions, and photographic and floral art displays.
Gala events are mainly funded through the sponsorship of the local business community, with additional income from community grants and the local council. The gala committee consists of volunteers who work throughout the year organising and coordinating the festival events.
Originally taking place during Northern Ireland’s traditional holiday period—the second or third week in July—events have recently been staged throughout the year, including a ‘Spooks’ Ball’ at Halloween and a Christmas festival.
