Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops
Watch video of author Jen Campbell talking about her bestselling book in Waterstone's, Belfast
A question on Twitter ('What is your pet peeve?) formed the beginnings of the Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops blog, a record of the bizarre and ridiculous queries posed to bookseller Jen Campbell in the course of daily retailing.
The blog became a book, which became a Sunday Times best-seller. It contains such incredible gems as 'Did Beatrix Potter ever write a book about dinosaurs?' and 'Excuse me... is this book edible?'
English author and poet Campbell visited Belfast this month to read from her book and answer questions in Waterstone's as part of the Belfast Book Festival.
Campbell shared some of her favourite tales from the bookshop floor, as well as an insight to her forthcoming poetry collection, published by Rialto in autumn 2012.
'The first memorable weird thing I have is when a customer came in and said that they had finished reading Anne Frank's diary and they loved it and wondered if she'd written a sequel,' recalls Campbell in the video below.
'After that, I wrote [the weird things] down,' added Campbell, who works in Ripping Yarns Bookshops in north London. 'Obviously not when people were still in the bookshop.'
