Northern Ireland’s first dedicated school of classical singing opens on September 6 in the recently-restored Belmont Tower in east Belfast.

Bel Canto School of Singing provides a holisitic approach to teaching classical singing, employing physical education methods to help singers perform to the best of their ability. The school is open to singers aged 12 -25.

Founder and director Marie O’Sullivan, also founder of Teachers of Singing in Ireland, is an experienced teacher and performer. O'Sullivan works alongside fellow singer and teacher Elizabeth Drwal-Stuttard, offering training and performance opportunities for young singers of all voice types.

Elizabeth Drwal-StuttardAt the school, emphasis is placed on achieving graded singing examinations, as well as GCSE and A-levels. O'Sullivan and Drwal-Stuttard also hope to offer guest masterclasses alongside regular recitals and concert performances.

'The school is the culmination of much planning and takes a multi-disciplinary approach to allow the young singer to develop and emerge,' O'Sullivan explains.

'Work on posture and breath control, as well as interpretive technique and development of repertoire all form part of the curriculum.'

'We are delighted to offer tuition in the glorious setting of Belmont Tower,' beams Drwal-Stuttard.

'This late gothic building, with its resonances with the author CS Lewis, provide an ideal setting for the young voice and imagination.'

On Saturday September 6, aspiring singers are invited to attend Bel Canto at 11am, when O'Sullivan provides a free singing lesson alongside performances from seasoned singers.

'At long last, Belfast is taking its place as a vibrant and artistic capital city,' remarks O'Sullivan.

'It is incredibly exciting to offer lessons in the art of classical singing to the very many young and talented voices that we know are out there.'
