Promising to be one of the most engaging and exciting events of the UK City of Culture 2013 year, the City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival rolls into town from May 2 – 6, featuring some of the biggest names on the international jazz scene.
Speaking at the official programme launch, the Mayor, Councillor Kevin Campbell, said that the City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival has become a signature event for Derry~Londonderry.
'With nearly 300 events, the wealth of international, national and local talent that will descend on the city’s venues over the May Bank Holiday is incredible. The City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival is one the people of this city look forward to year on year.'
Headliners include Soul Rebels (New Orleans), who have been described by Rolling Stone magazine as ‘utterly uninhibited hip-hop hybrid, not to be missed’; Neil Cowley, the UK City of Culture’s musician in residence, who will perform with his acclaimed Neil Cowley Trio; and Pink Martini (Portland, Oregan) who have performed all over the world.
Also performing over the weekend are The Overtones, the all male vocal group, who bring their blend of classic 1950s harmonies with a modern pop twist to the Millennium Forum; Northern Irish jazz drummer and producer David Lyttle; and The Puppini Sisters, who have performed alongside Michael Bublé and who will perform at the Grand Vintage Ball. Derry City Council’s Elaine Griffin outlined that this year’s festival is set to be an unforgettable experience. 'We have been fortunate to have been able to bring together a programme that has wide appeal. There will be plenty of beat on the city’s streets over the bank holiday weekend as we welcome new faces and old friends to the festival.'
Chairman of the Culture Company, Martin Bradley, added: 'Whether it’s going to one of the many gigs, participating in workshops or browsing through the vintage fair in Ebrington Square, the City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival is sure to bring fun, music, energy and dance to the city.'
