Classical Season at Waterfront Hall
A lavish production of One Night in Vienna by the Johann Strauss Orchestra kickstarts a year of classical events and concerts
'Variety and choice are the bywords regarding classical events at the Waterfront and the Ulster Hall,' says to programme manager, Simon Magill. 'We hope to have something for everyone, from special Ulster Orchestra concerts to glittering opera and ballet showpieces.'
A forthcoming highlight of the Waterfront Hall programme of classical concerts and events during 2013 is One Night in Vienna, a multifaceted piece that brings the best of Viennese classical music and dance to Belfast on Friday, February 1.
Presented by the company that brought the much loved Johann Strauss Gala to the Waterfront in previous years, One Night in Vienna is a magical musical journey to 19th century Vienna courtesy of the Johann Strauss Orchestra, accompanied by the Johann Strauss Dancers in glorious costumes of the period and guest soprano, Charlotte Ellett.
A host of Strauss family Viennese classics will include 'The Blue Danube Waltz', 'Radetzky March', 'Thunder And Lightening Polka' and 'The Laughing Song' from Die Fledermaus. Also performed will be timeless dance music from other waltz masters, including Tchaikovsky, Lehar and more.
Star soprano Charlotte Ellett’s many distinguished credits include engagements with the Halle Orchestra, Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Welsh National Opera. This sparkling new show also features irrepressible showman and conductor, Rainer Hersch.
'Since the Waterfront opened, opera has become more and more popular,' adds Magill, 'while ballets like Swan Lake and The Nutcracker are now guaranteed sell-outs. We stage world-class classical events for experienced lovers of the classics, while at the same time encouraging those who haven’t seen a classical event before to come along, sample a concert and hopefully have a great time.
'We also give home-grown talent the chance to take centre stage during the many schools concerts and events by local ensembles that take place all year round.
One Night in Vienna, on Friday, February 1, is a new Viennese show that builds on the popularity of the Johann Strauss Gala, which is consistently one of the Waterfront’s best attended classical shows, and a staple of the New Year programme for many years. The secret of the show’s success has been its universal appeal. Like the Strauss Gala, One Night in Vienna transports the audience back in time. It’s a formula that never fails.'
There will lots more to look forward to during 2013 at the Waterfront and Ulster Hall, including themed concerts by the Ulster Orchestra and Carmen, one of the world’s most popular operas, featuring some of the best-loved melodies in opera, including 'The Toreador’s Song', probably the best-known baritone aria of them all.
