Culture Night 2013
Derry~Londonderry and Belfast gear up for another night of free arts and entertainment on September 20
The countdown to Culture Night 2013 has begun, with the official launch of the programmes for Belfast and Derry~Londonderry loaded with events, happenings, demonstrations, and all manner of free events taking place on Friday, September 20.
The fifth Culture Night Belfast is arguably the hottest date in the city’s packed cultural calendar, with over 250 free, family-friendly events taking place right across the city – from the yoga-tastic big opening to the grande flaming finale featuring Firepoise and the Ulster Youth Orchestra.
Culture Night Belfast programme manager Adam Turkington said: 'I think Culture Night Belfast number five is the one where we all realise that this isn’t simply an amazing evening of fun, it’s a snapshot of what Belfast could so easily be like all year round.
'Attracting 30,000 people to explore, play with and enjoy the city last year was an achievement we are hugely proud of, and directly afterwards there was a general sense in Belfast that anything was possible. We hope we’ve capitalised on that collective sentiment this year and built something that’s getting ever closer to everybody’s shared vision for Belfast.
'Our slogan in the run up to Culture Night 2013 is 'Under Construction', and that’s exactly what we feel about the night itself. This year, we asked people what they thought would make Belfast a little like Culture Night every night and they’ve responded in their thousands.
'That’s the beauty of Culture Night. Every single person who loves this city owns and has a say in making Culture Night, which is why we’re expecting 20 September to be an evening to remember, and a reminder of just how amazing Belfast is, for visitors and us Belfastians alike.'
In Derry~Londonderry, the UK City of Culture 2013 celebrations have attracted hundreds of thousands of art lovers and tourists to the city to experience huge events like BBC Radio 1's One Big Weekend, The Return of Colmcille and the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, and Culture Night Derry~Londonderry is another date for your diary.
Now in its fourth year, Culture Night Derry~Londonderry will take place in more than 40 venues throughout the Maiden City for an extended programme of indoor and outdoor heritage, culture and events of historical significance for the whole family to enjoy.
Culture Night Derry~Londonderry, in coordination with Derry City Council, will again feature the much-loved Catwalks in the Craft Village, the Big Tickle Comedy Festival, the Nerve Centre's FabLab will be in full operation to host tours, demonstrations and hands-on workshops, and a whole host of galleries will run artists talks and tours all for free.
Mayor Cllr Martin Reilly welcomed the opportunity to once again showcase the unique heritage and talent that Derry~Londonderry has to offer on September 20. 'Culture Night is an excellent example of partnership working between local cultural businesses and projects, and a superb platform for them to reach new audiences and raise their profile.
'[It is] a chance to promote events well into the evening, offering people a chance to create a trail of activities where they can move around the city and amalgamate a real diverse range of entertainment.
'For this internationally recognised night our city becomes a cultural hub. Participation from the public in the City of Culture events to date has been phenomenal and I encourage you again to come out on this evening to embrace and experience the new and rich offerings we have here in the city.'
