Award nomination and Edinburgh Fringe appearance for Derry company Sole Purpose Productions
Derry theatre company Sole Purpose Productions have been nominated for an Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award for Patricia Byrne's Don¹t Say A Word, which will be performed at this years' Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
The winners of the award, organised in association with The Big Issue, will be announced in August.
One-woman performance Don¹t Say A Word examines the theme of domestic violence. It was first produced in 2004 and researched in association with Foyle Women¹s Aid, The Probation Board for Northern Ireland and the PSNI Domestic Violence Unit.
Written and performed by Patricia Byrne and directed by Shauna Kelpie, the play has been touring to theatres and community venues throughout Ireland since 2004.
In addition to writing and performing, Byrne has been a co-artistic director of Sole Purpose Productions for eleven years.
'It is wonderful to have this opportunity to take the production to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. We are delighted to have received funding from Culture Ireland to enable us to make this happen.'
Kelpie was assistant director with the O'Casey Theatre Company and was the director of Foyle Film Festival for ten years.
'I have been touring with this production all over Ireland,' she says. 'To 400-seater theatres such as The Market Place in Armagh to community centres in remote places like Kilnaleck in County Cavan.
'It is great to now be in a position to take the play to new audiences across the water and to an international theatre festival.'
Other Sole Purpose members include assistant director and stage manager Debbie Caulfield and lighting and sound technician Barry McDonald.
'The fact that Don't Say A Word has been nominated for the Freedom of Expression Award will raise its profile in Edinburgh and hopefully attract a good audience,' says Caulfield.
'The festival can be very competitive with over 2000 shows on.'
McDonald said that he is delighted to have this opportunity to work on a show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
