Free Theatre Training at the Lyric Drama Studio

Six-month programme available for 20 aspiring actors

Belfast's Lyric Drama Studio is offering a free 6-month course of workshops and masterclasses to 20 selected students aged 18-22.

Prospective candidates are invited to audition at workshops on Saturday August 30, beginning at 10.00, 10.45, 11.45 and 12.30.

Places are limited and are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Candidates are advised to arrive as early as possible and be ready to wait until the next workshop in which a space is available.

The Lyric Theatre on Ridgeway Street has been demolished, with a new multi-million pound theatre expected to open in 2010Auditions take place in two stages. Those shortlisted following group workshops in the morning will be given an individual audition slot later in the day.

Hopefuls should select and prepare one monologue (speech delivered by a single character) of 2-3 minutes in length from a play of their choice.

Final places in the Lyric Drama Studio are strictly limited to 20.

The studio aims to equip young actors who are serious about the profession with skills to help them to realise their professional ambitions.

The programme involves local and visiting theatre talent, theatre visits, an intense rehearsal period in Easter 2009 and a final public performance.

Actor Dan Gordon (aka Red Hand Luke of BBC NI's Give My Head Peace), himself a graduate from the Lyric Drama Studio, recommends the training on offer:

'The Studio has always set out to provide a bridge between aspiration and achievement. It is a vital platform for committed aspiring actors to have the opportunity to get further training, get semi-professional experience and to get to where they want to be.'

Former incarnations of the Lyric Studio did exactly this for a generation of actors who became regulars on the Ridgeway Street stage.

It is hoped that the new Studio can do the same for the multi-million pound new Lyric building, scheduled to open in 2010.

Auditions for the Lyric Drama Studio take place at the Drama and Film Centre at Queen’s University, 20 University Square, Belfast (Queen's Film Theatre entrance). Doors open at 9.45am.
