Sons & Daughters Concert to Open City of Culture
BBC NI to broadcast gala performance at The Venue as Derry~Londonderry's year as the first UK City of Culture begins
To mark the start of a year-long celebration of arts and culture in Derry~Londonderry, the first UK City of Culture, BBC Northern Ireland and City of Culture 2013 will present Sons & Daughters - The Opening Concert.
This gala evening on Sunday, January 20 will feature ‘sons and daughters’ of Derry~Londonderry from stage and screen – local artistes with international reputations who will reflect the city’s cultural, historical and industrial achievements in music, word and song.
The event will be staged in The Venue, the new purpose-built pavilion at Ebrington, and will be recorded for BBC Northern Ireland television and broadcast live on the night on BBC Radio Ulster.
The first major celebration of 2013, also supported by Derry City Council, will certainly be a night to remember. Among those already lined up to appear include Phil Coulter (pictured above), The Undertones, Damian McGinty, Paul Brady, Amanda Burton and Dana, with more names due to be confirmed closer to the concert.

The city’s Mayor, Cllr Kevin Campbell, said the Sons & Daughters concert was a great opportunity to share the city’s success and showcase local talent.
'Our city is renowned for its excellent musical and cultural talent and we are delighted to offer the public the chance to see the city’s most loved musicians and performers come together in their home town for a free concert.
'This gala event, which will reflect the city’s cultural, historical and industrial achievements in music, word and song, promises to be a great night’s entertainment and one of the highlights of our exciting year of events during 2013.'
Tickets to attend Sons & Daughters – The Opening Concert are complimentary and will be allocated on the basis of a random draw. Members of the public can apply for tickets from 10am on Thursday, December 13 until 5pm on Friday, January 4, 2013.
