Walled City Music Festival invites the public to participate in a number of classical music fusion events in Derry~Londonderry from July 20
Cyclists of all ages and abilities will be urged to get on their bike at this year’s Walled City Music Festival in Derry~Londonderry during a unique event designed to coincide with the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Over 100 cyclists are expected to take part in an open-air performance by whistling, singing and ringing their bells en route to Derry~Londonderry’s Guildhall on July 20 as part of the Sound of Sport programme within the festival.
The cyclists will include the Foyle Cycling Club and the RNIB’s Tandem Club as they take part in a special premiere performance of ‘Eine Brise’, or ‘Breeze’, by composer Mauricio Kagel.
The festival’s Community & Outreach Officer, Alice Lewis, said: ‘We’re really excited to bring this event to the streets of Derry. Young and old are invited to join the fun and be part of this collective music-making on wheels.
'We’ll assemble at 10.30am on Sunday, July 20 at Sainsbury’s café before setting off along the river and finishing up at the Guildhall. If you’re interested just email me on email@example.com to register.’
The Walled City Music Festival has received funding from the National Lottery through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Vicki Kennedy, from the National Lottery, said: 'Most of us have been enthralled by an outstanding summer of sport so far and there is so much more to come.
'Forget the Tour de France – people in Derry will have the unique opportunity to hear the Sound of Sport with this marvellous piece of innovative music involving cyclists. The Walled City Music Festival continues to produce and promote must-see musical events and 2014 is no exception. National Lottery players can be proud to have helped fund such a fantastic festival.'
Sound of Sport events are also programmed for July 19 with an afternoon of music and sporting activities at the Sports Hall, University of Ulster, Magee. Aimed at families, sports and music lovers this free, fun afternoon runs from 12pm until 4.15pm at the Sports Hall, Magee and will include table-tennis, karate, archery and art workshops.
Walled City Music festival runs from July 18 – 26. The programme includes classical favourites, film and visual art collaborations, and premieres of new works. All will be performed by a host of world-class musicians, including the Coull String Quartet.
