Belfast-born artist challenging accepted forms of cultural identity
Micky Donnelly was born in Belfast in 1952. He studied at the University of Ulster, receiving a BA (1979) and an MA (1981). In 1985 he was awarded the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Scholarship to the British School at Rome.
He has exhibited extensively in solo shows as well as being a participant in many international touring shows of Irish art including Irish Art Now, Turin (1986), Cries and Whispers, touring Australia and New Zealand (1988), Germany / Ireland Exchange, touring Ireland and West Germany (1988-1989), On the Balcony of the Nation, touring the USA (1990-1992), and The Fifth Province, touring Canada from 1991 to 1993.
Donnelly’s work has been bought by many public collections.
In his own words his work embodies ‘a desire to challenge accepted forms of cultural identity, and to investigate the emotional residues of political conditioning.’
