O-BON Japanese Festival of Taiko and Light

Inaugural celebration of Japanese culture with traditional music, theatre and more at Derry's Playtrail

Festival Details

Saturday, 06 June 2015

O-Bon is one of the most important festivals of the year in Japan. At the heart of O-BON is family, food, dance and taiko drumming. The whole festival is a feast of colour, rhythm and lights. All across the country people make the often long journey home to be with their families. For three days in summer they celebrate their ancestors and their roots. The festival often ends with the lighting of lanterns on which are written the names of loved ones or messages of hope and aspirations for the future.

On Saturday, June 6 Derry-Londonderry will become the first city in the UK and Ireland to host their very own traditional O-BON festival. The event, at the Playtrail, Racecourse Rd, will be an opportunity to showcase the already rich and diverse community of taiko players, dancers and other Japanese art forms in Derry-Londonderry. The evening's celebrations will culminate in a display of lanterns within the beautiful grounds of The Playtrail woods and amphitheatre.

Tickets are on sale at the Playtrail, the Diamond Centre, Claudy and online at WeGotTickets.
